Local area

Elverhøi is located 6 kms to the east of the thriving town of Sunndalsøra. The town has a population of about 10,000 people and is well supplied with supermarkets, trades, a shopping centre, and large sport shop, banks, hotels and restaurants. The town is dominated by an aluminium smelter that uses hydro power collected from the surrounding mountains and its presence ensures reliable services and a robust local economy.

The small village of Grøa is spread along both sides of the river and is dotted with picturesque historic houses dating back to the same era as Elverhøi, a school and a thriving garden centre.

The town of Oppdal is located approximately 60 km east of Elverhøi at the cross roads with the main north south highway linking Oslo and Trondheim. This is the nearest railway station and very efficient and comfortable trains offer a very scenic journey right up the spine of the country directly from Oslo Airport. Cars can be hired in either Molde or Oppdal and there is a small airstrip suitable for private planes almost walking distance from the house should you choose to fly yourself in.

How to get here

Elverhøi is located 6kms east of the small town of Sunndalsøra in the Møre og Romsdal region of central Norway.

By road:

  • Driving directions from Molde

86 km and takes about 1 hour 20 mins. From Molde airport turn right onto the E39 and follow along the side of the fjord. After 14 kms the road turns into the E62 signposted to Sunndalsøra with the E39 to Trondheim branching off to the left. Continue for a further 69 kms on the E62 all the way to Sunndalsøra. You go through a couple of long tunnels and as you approach the town you drive over a large metal bridge over the river Driva and come immediately to a roundabout. Turn right at the roundabout on to the R70, past a large brown church and drive for 7 kms after which you will see a signpost to Vinnu airport. Slow down and take the next left after a few hundred meters signposted by a brown sign to Leikvin. Drive to the top of the small hill and take the first right after a small church and graveyard (where Barbara is buried) and you will see a farm in front of you. Drive towards the farm and Elverhøi is the white house just below the farm buildings which is reached under a white and green arch.

  • Driving directions from Trondheim

The airport is just east of the city and the journey is 212 kms and will take between 2 and a half and 3 hours depending on traffic (there may be a toll as you pass the city but Norway is virtually cashless now so I am sure cards will work). You follow the E6 south to Oppdal where you turn right at the main roundabout on to the R70 signed to Sundalsøra. The first part of the drive is relatively flat but then becomes more dramatic after Oppdal. You drive through a narrow and very steep gorge at Gjøra where you stay on the R70 passing back and forth over the Driva river. Eventually you reach Grøa, which you effectively by-pass on your right, before coming to the Elverhøi bridge. As you go over the bridge you will see a riding stables on your left with a dozen tiny little barren paddocks each with a horse in it and you turn right to Leikvin (marked with a brown sign)after about 300 m. Drive to the top of the small hill and take the first right after a small church and graveyard (where Barbara is buried) and you will see a farm in front of you. Drive towards the farm and Elverhøi is the white house just below the farm buildings which is reached under a white and green arch. The distance from Oppdal to the Elverhøi bridge is about 62 kms and takes about 45 mins.

By Air:
The nearest airports are Molde (86kms) and Trondheim (208 kms).  Multiple daily flights are available from Oslo and beyond. Car hire is available at both airports.

By train:
A relaxed alternative to the domestic flight from Oslo to Molde is to take the Oslo to Trondheim NSB train and get off at Oppdal. Very conveniently the train stops at Oslo Airport with the platform only 150m from the Arrivals hall!  Car hire can be arranged from Oppdal to drive the remaining 61 kms to Elverhoi
